The name Jarad Kohlar is synonymous with Australian adventure sports. With an impressive resume of race wins across numerous adventure disciplines, Jarad personifies what adventure sport is all about – tough, eclectic, fun-loving and a little bit crazy. You’d struggle to find a harder working, more passionate adventure athlete anywhere in the world.

Jarad applies his intensely competitive nature to many adventure disciplines including multisport, adventure racing, trail running, mountain biking, paddling and obstacle course racing. His athletic career has taken him all over the globe, from the Middle East and China, to Europe, the US, New Zealand and beyond.

But Jarad’s true passion lies in teaching and coaching; introducing people from all walks of life to the transformative power of the great outdoors. He constantly encourages everyday people to explore their potential, to do well in whatever they pursue and to celebrate every achievement.
He is perhaps best known for doggedly promoting and growing the sport of ocean ski paddling.

Mat grew up in a small country town of 1000 people in Canada. He was born with skates on his feet, playing competitive ice hockey from the age of five till he was twenty. In High-School he played every sport with State Championships appearances in Volleyball, Badminton, Basketball and Track & Field. His coaching career started when he was fifteen. He worked his summer breaks as a sports counselor in summer camps and leadership camps. Fast forward to enrolling in a Sports Science degree at the University of Ottawa where he found his true love for running. After quitting ice hockey he joined the varsity XC and Track in his 4th year where he made it to the XC State Championships.

A year later in 2010, he ran his first road 1/2 marathon in harsh Canadian winter conditions of -28C. A few months later Mat raced in his first couple trail race and completed his first Full Marathon in Montreal. Trail running had him hooked where in 2011 he came 3rd overall in his first Trail Ultramarathon, a 160K with 8000m elevation in Pittsburg, Vermont. While finishing his degree, Mat started as an Strength & Conditioning coach working in many different gyms, working along some of the best in the business. He had the great opportunity to work for Nike as the Nike Run Club Australia & New Zealand Head Coach and with Lululemon as a running brand ambassador.

Over the past 8 years, from running 3rd overall at the Coast to Kosci 240K (non-stop), 5th overall at The Speed Project 550K Ultra Relay from Santa Monica to Las Vegas, Melbourne Half Marathon 1:14:25, to 4th overall at Australian Sky Running Championships Marathon, 1st overall & CR at Roller Coaster Run Marathon, raising $17 000 for Movember within the Sub Three Run charity 800K ultra relay run from Adelaide to Melbourne to 3rd overall at the Upper Murray Challenge (Multisports Race), you’ve probably met Mat already on a starting line, somewhere along the trails, road or during post-race or run beers festivities.

After running and racing around the world, Mat has finally established himself in Albury NSW where he now calls home with his wife Bel, daughter Elkie and three dogs; Emmy, Koda and Fin. The Riverina region is stunning and a beautiful playground for any outdoor enthusiast. We simply got it all here, he says. After being a sole trader for ten plus years he joined the team at O-Health Albury as an Exercise Scientist. Since his arrival in the region in 2019 Mat has been highly involved in the running community. From being a member of the Trails & Ales crew, Albury Athletics Club, Mitta Mitta Canoe Club, to a regular attendee at the Albury/Wodonga Park Run to Founder of the Dawn League Run Club, Mat loves to get involved in the running community by sharing his knowledge, experience, passion and love for our sport of running.

Joining force with Jarad as a Race Director of the Riverina Events – Trail Run Series & Murray Marathon Festival gives Mat a great opportunity to keep helping a wider community to unlock their full potential in living an active lifestyle.
